Police dig moor after reports skull found in Keith search

POLICE have been digging on Saddleworth Moor for murder victim Keith Bennett after reports of human remains being found.

Officers are treating the discovery, reportedly a skull, with caution.

The suspected remains were found during an independent search led by amateur sleuth Russell Edwards before being reported to Greater Manchester Police.

Keith, 12, was snatched 58 years ago by Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley and the case has never been resolved.

Officers were pictured digging on the moor near Dove Stone Reservoir in Greenfield yesterday.

They called off the excavation around 6.15pm due to deteriorating light and were due to resume their search today In a statement, the force said: "We have always said that GMP would act on any significant information which may lead to the recovery of Keith and reunite him with his family.

"Officers met with Mr Edwards yesterday evening (September 29) and he was able to locate a site of interest and provide us with further details of the work he has been carrying out.
