Football club celebrates quarter-tonne of success

A GROUP of men who meet each week at a football club in Margate with the intention of shedding unwanted pounds have lost a quarter of a tonne of excess weight between them in the last year.

At Man v Fat Margate Seniors, which is aimed at men aged 50 and above with a BMI of over 27.5, classifying them as overweight or obese according to NHS guidelines, 14 men get together at Margate Football Club every Monday evening with the shared objective of showing the red card to fat.

The Margate club is the only one in the UK dedicated to men over the age of 50. It was originally established as a pilot for older players within the programme's community across Kent. It launched in July of last year, and 12 months on the 14 players have lost an astonishing 250kg between them.
