Lose that fear of speaking in public

July 12, 2025

|

Independent on Saturday

ANYONE can learn how to speak in front of a group of people. You should first start with a healthy dose of attitude and self-belief.

The benefits of speaking far outweigh the fear of it.

◆ It allows you to express your ideas.

◆ You communicate more effectively as a business leader.

◆ It can help you to advance your career.

◆ You can use the skill to grow your business through public talks and engagements.

◆ Every professional career incorporates an element of having to present to people.

◆ Speaking is a way of promoting yourself and your personal brand.

◆ Your network in business grows much faster when you speak to a group of people.

◆ Every time you speak, your confidence grows, and your level of influence grows with it.

To help you with your fear of speaking, I need you to clearly identify what you are fearful of. In the space below, list everything that makes you afraid to present in front of a group of people.

Do not hold back. Write down the big fears. Write down the small fears. Do not proceed any further until you identify your fears.

I have summarised below a list of the most common fears relating to public speaking. Compare your list to the common fears listed below.

1. I am afraid of forgetting my content.

2. I am afraid of not being as good as the speaker before me.

3. I am afraid of speaking too loudly or too softly.
