Isro enters elite club with its 1st space docking op

NEW DELHI: India successfully performed its first autonomous satellite docking operation on Thursday, with its space agency achieving precise control of the combined spacecraft afterwards, marking the nation's entry into an exclusive club of countries mastering this crucial space technology.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) confirmed in a post on X that its Space Docking Experiment (SPADEX) successfully united two satellites approximately 475 kilometres above Earth, making India only the fourth nation after Russia, the United States, and China to demonstrate this capability.
"Post docking, control of two satellites as a single object is successful," Isro announced, adding that undocking manoeuvres and power transfer tests would follow in coming days.
The achievement comes after a cautious approach to the complex operation. On January 12, Isro had conducted a trial run, bringing the spacecraft within three metres before moving them to a safe distance for data analysis.
