Police were called after reports that the boys had got into difficulty in the River Tyne near a bridge at Ovingham, Northumberland, on Saturday at 3.30pm.
A 14-year-old was declared dead at the scene, while the other, aged 13, was last night in a critical condition in hospital.
Firefighters cut down a swing at the scene yesterday afternoon.
