Starmer plan to keep 'obscene' child benefit cap sparks MPs' fury
July 19, 2023
|Daily Express
LABOUR MPs are "seething" over Sir Keir Starmer's plan to keep a cap that limits child benefit claims to two children.
Shadow Culture Secretary Lucy Powell said there is "no money left" and insisted the party will not make promises it cannot afford.
But the decision has caused fury, with Scottish Labour leader Anas Sawar insisting his MSPs "continue to believe that it exacerbates poverty" and it must be changed.
Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who now sits as an independent, said that many of the party's MPs are "seething with anger".
Poverty
He said: "Even the Blair government, which Keir Starmer often quotes, did do a great deal to lift children out of poverty by not having a two-child policy."
The measure, introduced by Tory former Chancellor George Osborne during his austerity drive, prevents parents claiming for any third or subsequent child.

Help our hospitals recover by boosting health care at home
A RECENT analysis of NHS data shows that patients staying in hospital longer than medically necessary are costing the health service more than £200million a month. These are people who are fit to be discharged but can’t leave because the right care simply isn’t available in the community. The result? Beds taken by people who don’t need to be there, while patients wait in corridors or ambulances for treatment.
