Claims car maker ‘knowingly’ inflates mileage for own benefit

ELON Musk’s beleaguered Tesla car firm has been accused of manipulating mileages so warranties run out faster.

Californian Nyree Hinton has filed a lawsuit accusing the EV makers of inflating the distance covered by his 2020 Model Y by 15%.

That led to his 50,000-mile warranty being voided ahead of schedule — and him having to find £7,500 for repairs to the suspension.

If certified as a class-action suit and the allegations proved, Tesla could face paying out millions of dollars in damages.

Mr Hinton, of Los Angeles, alleges Tesla vehicles do not measure distance in the traditional way but use a formula based on driver behaviour, energy use, and internal algorithms.
