Specialty medicines are used to treat chronic, complex, and rare diseases. These medicines are typically more expensive than traditional medicines. Also, they differ in terms of the complexity of disease management and their distribution. The share of specialty medicines in overall pharmaceutical spending has been consistently increasing over the past decade, from 22 per cent in 2011 to 39 per cent in 2021. By 2026, it is expected to further increase to 45 percent globally.
