Railways may scrap new DFCs, enhance existing corridors

The Ministry of Railways is considering the scrapping of three newly proposed Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) East Coast, East-West, and North-South, and concentrate on enhancing the capacities of the current ones. This alternative is being planned because the existing projects continue to be delayed owing to land acquisition troubles.

The ministry is thinking of adding track lines to its existing Eastern and Western DFCs, senior officials said.

The new plan has delayed the completion of detailed project reports (DPRS) by five months. They were supposed to be submitted by this month, according to internal communication between the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL) and the ministry.

A DPR is the foundational document for any infrastructure project to be undertaken. It contains geographical estimates, location surveys, compliance burdens, and financial assessments.
