MEDIR LA VIDA DE UN HOMBRE como Denzel Wasgington es tarea de titanes. Si pensamos en reconocimientos, estos van desde dos premios Oscar, tres Globo de Oro y un Tony en el mundo del teatro, hasta la medalla presidencial otorgada en el 2022. El New York Times colocó a este actor como el Mejor del Siglo XXI, mientras que el festival de Berlín puso en sus manos un par del premio Oso de Plata.
Pero Denzel está hoy aquí para cronometrar la entrevista. El pretexto, averiguar sobre su personaje de Equalizer 3 (2023), donde regresa con el personaje del retirado agente de inteligencia y ex marine Robert McCall, quien intenta ponerle reset a su vida en un poblado de Italia.
El primer intento de saber las razones tras esta cinta que procede de Equalizer (2014) y Equalizer 2 (2018), no tiene una elaborada respuesta por parte de Washington, cuya voz llega por la bocina de la computadora desde Atlanta, Georgia, donde filma la adaptación de la conocida obra de August Wilson, The Piano Lesson.
“Quise hacer una nueva cinta de Equalizer porque me llevo muy bien con el director Antoine Fuqua y sé lo que él y el escritor Richard Wenk pueden lograr. Sumado a eso, ir a Italia, país que amo era muy buena idea”, confiesa el actor de 68 años.
Al igual que McCall, aquí no hay respuestas intelectuales, sino instintivas, como cada golpe que el personaje da en su cinta, preciso y sin mucha emoción detrás. Su manera de decir las cosas denota a un Denzel pragmático. “Siendo honesto contigo, no pienso de manera profunda el tema de la violencia. Esta ha estado desde el principio de nuestros tiempos, revelando que como humanidad somos violentos”, confiesa.
