Football fans around the world were in mourning following the death of Manchester United hero Sir Bobby Charlton last week, with the Prince of Wales leading the tributes to the man hailed as England’s greatest ever player.
Prince William, who is president of the Football Association, wrote: “Sir Bobby Charlton. First Division Champion. European Champion. World Champion. Legend. A true great who will be remembered forever. Thank you Sir Bobby.”
His sentiments were shared by former Red Devil David Beckham, who remembered the impact Sir Bobby had on his career – by recommending a young David to United while he was at the Bobby Charlton Soccer & Sports Academy. “It all began with Sir Bobby,” David wrote on Instagram. “[He] was the reason I had the opportunity to play for Manchester United.”
The former England captain also revealed that his middle name – Robert – was given in honour of the 1966 World Cup star.
