Honda Motorcycle & Scooters, the Indian subsidiary of Japan’s largest two-wheeler maker is making a crucial entry into a large mass market motorcycle segment to inch closer to the Number One position and edge ahead of its erstwhile partner Hero MotoCorp — the current market leader.
Despite selling two wheelers for over a couple of decades, Honda was absent from a critical mass market entry motorcycle segment, which accounts for over a quarter of total sales in the country.
With the all-new Shine 100, developed from the ground-up, Honda hopes to participate in this large segment but it will have to overcome two major challenges of rising cost in the entry bike segment and a formidable position of Hero Splendor in the segment — which has remained a top choice for decades.
Undeterred, HMSI is betting big on this model which has been developed specifically for the Indian market. The Shine 100 has been priced at Rs 64,900 ex-showroom Mumbai and Honda claims the incoming bike to be its most affordable and fuel-efficient mass market motorcycle yet.
