When Gillian Anderson burst onto the acting scene in the 1990s as FBI agent Dana Scully in The X-Files, Hollywood agreed that a star was born.
Her poster was on the bedroom walls of teenage boys around the world, and she quickly became a pop culture icon – a mantle the 52-year-old still holds to this day.
So Tinseltown executives and fans were equally surprised when she stepped out of the spotlight once her turn in the hit sci-fi series ended.

“I had a complicated relationship with becoming so famous so young, and seeing the worst part of what the industry can be,” she says. “I really hated it and wanted to get away.”
