She first stepped foot on our shores in December 1953 as a 27-year-old monarch who was still adjusting to her new role.

The Queen smiles as she's warmly welcomed during her Silver Jubilee tour, February 1, 1977.

Wearing her Coronation dress, Her Majesty climbs the steps of Parliament alongside Philip to open proceedings in 1954.

"My first words must be to tell you how happy I am to be amongst you," the Queen said then, adding that she felt at home here, despite having travelled from the other side of the world.

Since that first visit, when three-quarters of the population turned out to see the new sovereign, Elizabeth II has toured New Zealand on nine more occasions, each time winning us over with her grace, dignity, charm and genuine affection for this land and its people.

Meet and greet: The Queen in Christchurch, 1977.

On her last visit, to mark her Golden Jubilee in 2002, she said she particularly appreciated "the warmth and friendliness of New Zealanders, the diverse culture and stunning beauty of the country, and the opportunity to share your special way of life".

Her Majesty noted that New Zealand was a very different country to the one she had first visited almost 50 years earlier, but there were constants that derived from the enduring values of Kiwis, including "a sense of fairness and justice, a willingness to be outward-looking and an individuality of approach".

She added, "It is both a privilege and a pleasure to have served as Queen of New Zealand."

The royal guest is treated to a pōwhiri.
