Father and son spoke every day as Sainz Sr dominated
Carlos Sainz Jr has talked to Motorsport News about the emotions he felt as he watched his father take a second Dakar victory for Peugeot on Saturday.
Following the 55-year-old’s win in Argentina, his son wrote to his father to let him know what his latest – and arguably greatest – win meant to the family who were waiting at home in Spain.
Sainz Sr dominated this year’s South American marathon, bringing his Peugeot 3008 DKR home 43 minutes ahead of his former team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah. Rated as one of the toughest Dakars in history, the Spaniard was delighted with his result.
Sainz Sr said: “I have never run a race like this. Every day there was a trap, you had to be lucky. It’s difficult to win a race that lasts two weeks, so when you win with this advantage, you have done the job well.”
The second week of Dakar was one of the most stressful ever in the Sainz’s family home in Spain.
