For Laura Gao, a cartoonist born in Wuhan and based in San Francisco, the United States, it was doubly heartbreaking to see her home town marginalised abroad as her relatives in China lived in uncertainty and fear.
She herself was subjected to antiAsian racism, which has surged in the US during the pandemic.
“I had someone even cough in my face, and I was wearing a mask and he wasn’t,” recalls the 25-year-old over Zoom. “All of that was just really, really hard to bear.”
Gao could not change the circumstance of the viral outbreak, but she thought she might change the way people saw Wuhan.
In April 2020, she drew a comic, The Wuhan I Know, to show people another side of her home town, from its scenic beauty to its vibrant street food culture.
