Sharply escalating tensions in West Asia following the United States’ assasination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani sent crude oil prices soaring past the $70 per barrel mark on Monday.

US-Iran Tensions Send Crude Soaring, Rupee, Bourses Take A Beating

The spike resulted in the Indian rupee taking a beating on the currency exchanges; Sensex and Nifty falling the farthest in over six months; and retail prices of petrol and diesel rising to their highest in over a year.

Already on an upward trend over the past few weeks, brent crude prices have gone from just under $66 per barrel at the beginning of the year to breaching the $70 per barrel mark, as fears of a supply disruption peaked. With India dependent on imports from the Gulf region for most of its oil requirements, increased tensions affected Indian currency and indices particularly hard.
