RESEARCH
The impact of a massive avalanche from the Ronti Peak in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand in February has been detailed by an international team of more than 50 researchers in a recent assessment published in Science.
The avalance set in motion a cascade of events that killed at least 70 people and damaged two hydropower projects. Scientists have now reconstructed what happened with the help of remote sensing data, eyewitness videos, seismic data, and field observations.
The team calculated that nearly 27 million cubic meters of rock and ice “detached” from the north face of the 6,063 meter-tall Ronti Peak and was in a minute-long descent. When the mass hit the Ronti Gad valley floor, about 1,800 meters below, it “released the energy equivalent to 15 Hiroshima atomic bombs,” the BBC reported on Sunday.
