Tributes to Barbara, the last survivor of Portland Square bomb

DAUGHTER HAILS MOTHER'S STRENGTH OF CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY

THE last living survivor of one of the worst bombing attacks during the Plymouth Blitz of World War Two has died.

Mother of four Barbara Mills passed away peacefully, aged 92, on New Year's Day, after leading a long and happy life with her family.

She was the only living survivor of the bombing raid on the Portland Square air raid shelter in which 76 people perished during the attacks of 1941.

Mrs Mills has often spoken about that night and just last year, aged 91, she spoke to The Herald about how she amazingly survived.

Deborah Horton, Mrs Mills' daughter, has paid tribute to her mother, saying she was an incredibly strong woman who lived a long and happy life in Plymouth.

She added that, despite facing heartbreaking tragedy in the Blitz, she had a 'lovely life? Mrs Mills was among those taking shelter in Portland Square when it was hit by a bomb on the night of April 22, 1941.

Mrs Mills (née Cundy) was one of only three who made it out alive and was the sole survivor, at just 11 years old, of her entire family.

Speaking to The Herald in 2016, she said: “It was very noisy with the [anti-aircraft] guns going off and I started to cry.
