MORE than a quarter of detectives employed by Devon and Cornwall Police say they want to leave the job, with many citing extra demands by the Crown Prosecution Service as one reason.
The Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers, carried out a survey of its detectives in December last year and found that 72% of respondents said the extra work had increased their intention to leave their detective role. In addition, 59% said their morale was low or very low.
The detectives also claimed that the additional work given to police forces by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to prepare ‘trial ready’ prosecution files led to 86% of Devon and Cornwall detectives reporting a decrease in their job satisfaction, and 27% wanting to leave the police service altogether.
