Alibaba reveals record sales for Singles Day event in spite of China's curbs on big tech

The Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba reported record sales during its Singles Day shopping extravaganza, giving it a much-needed boost after a year in which it became the symbol of a government crackdown that hit the country’s technology sector hard.
Alibaba reveals record sales for Singles Day event in spite of China's curbs on big tech

Alibaba said that Chinese buyers spent 540.3 bn yuan (£63bn) at the 11-day event, despite a more lowkey sales campaign after pressure from the government to tone down aggressive promotions and rampant consumerism.

Combined sales with its industry rival JD.com reached 889 bn yuan, which was also a record and up about a fifth from last year.
