The Maha Vikas Aghadi government on Wednesday received a major jolt after the Supreme Court rejected its plea to stay local body elections, in the absence of the OBC quota, to 105 nagar panchayats, Bhandara and Gondia zilla parishads and panchayat samitis in their jurisdiction, and 4,554 gram panchayats. These polls were slated for December 21.
After Wednesday's ruling, polling will take place, barring in 23 of the total 105 seats in Bhandara and Gondia zilla parishads, 45 of the total 210 seats in 15 panchayat samitis under the jurisdiction of Bhandara and Gondia and 344 of the total 1,802 seats in 106 nagar panchayats. The State Election Commission has already stayed polling in these seats, while in the balance it will take place as per schedule.
