NEW DELHI: Ignorance is not always bliss, particularly in taking preventive measures to get protected from getting infected to COVID-19 as India has yet again reported 81,466 fresh cases — the biggest jump in daily new infections the country has reported in the last six months. India had reported nearly 81,000 cases on October 1, 2020.
After the sudden spurt in COVID-19 cases, the Centre swung into action and held a high-level review meeting with chief secretaries, DGPs and health secretaries of all states and UTs over the issue. At the meeting, which was chaired by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, the 11 states marked as “states of grave concern” were asked to take strict action to contain the contagion.
The 11 states of grave concern are Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Haryana as they have contributed 90 per cent of COVID-19 cases, 90.5 per cent of deaths in 14 days till March 31.
As per Health Ministry’s report, on Friday, Maharashtra reported the highest daily new cases at 47,827, followed by Chhattisgarh with 4,617 new infections and Karnataka with 4,234 new cases.
In India, the confirmed cases stood at 1,23,03,131, which includes 6,14,696 active cases, 1,15,25,039 recoveries and 1,63,396 deaths. The country witnessed 469 fatalities and 50,356 recoveries in the last 24 hours.
