RHYS McClenaghan has vowed to “raise the bar” after one mistake cost him a shot at a medal in the pommel horse final at the Tokyo Olympics.

Just as in the European Championships earlier this year, the Ulster man was punished for an early mistake that proved costly.

The 22-year-old knew his chances were gone just a fifth of the way through his 50-second routine because one of his fingers got caught and he lost control, which led to him having to restart.

He finished seventh out of the eight qualifiers for the final, scoring 13.1 consisting of 6.4 for degree of difficulty and 6.7 for execution.

Max Whitlock, the multiple medal winner for Great Britain, added another gold to his collection with a score of 15.58.

Rhys said: “I was disappointed with my performance today.
