Until the statue, made of granite, is completed, a hologram of Netaji will be unveiled at the spot on January 23, he added.
"At a time when the entire nation is marking the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, I am glad to share that his grand statue, made of granite, will be installed at India Gate. This would be a symbol of India's indebtedness to him," Modi tweeted. "Till the grand statue of Netaji Bose is completed, a hologram statue of his will be present at the same place. I will unveil the hologram statue on 23rd January, Netaji's birth anniversary," he added.
According to people familiar with the matter, the statue, once completed, will be placed under the canopy that used to have a statue of King George V, which was removed in 1968. The canopy is situated near the Amar Jawan Jyoti, whose "eternal flame", not extinguished for 50 years, was on Friday merged with the eternal flame at National War Memorial.
The dimension of the granite statue will be 28 feet high and six feet wide, a release from the Prime Minister's Office said.
