A MINISTER today admitted it was a “shame” some of the world’s largest polluting countries had not joined a UK-led push to end the use of global coal power.
Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said “we’re consigning coal to history” after more than 40 countries agreed to phase out the fuel — the single biggest contributor to climate change — and end support for new coal power plants.
However, some of the world’s major polluters, including Australia, China and the US, have not yet signed up to the pledge ahead of leaders meeting to discuss transitions to clean energy at COP26 today.
Asked about the absence of the countries, Mr Kwarteng said progress was being made.
