Humble Holden has made the Robins fly

IT’S going to be fascinating to see how Dean Holden fares in the Bristol City hotseat over the course of this season – and he’s certainly got off to an encouraging start.

I know Dean from my time working in recruitment and opposition analysis at the Robins under Lee Johnson and he was a very likeable, articulate, popular figure with no ego, and he got the nod ahead of many others for the No.1 role, notably Johnson’s other assistant Jamie McAllister.

He has surrounded himself with a strong backroom team in my former Wolves teammate Paul Simpson and Keith Downing.

I was interested to see Holden sometimes take a back seat in last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at Reading. He often stood back in the technical area allowing Keith or Paul to provide instruction to his players, again that ego put to one side.
