Malaria still ranks second after pneumonia as a leading cause of death in Kenya. As we mark World Malaria Day on 25 April, CATE ODERA looks at where we are in the fight against this deadly disease.
It’s 2018. Road travel from Nairobi to Lodwar no longer takes days. Planes take offfrom our airports daily, linking Nairobi to the rest of Africa and the world. You can literally have a breakfast meeting in Kampala, a business lunch in Arusha and be home in time to tuck your children into bed.
Kenya is thriving. Yet we have been unable to eradicate malaria from the region. Why? This is probably one of the reasons President Uhuru Kenyatta recently visited Cuba. After all, if this ‘underdog’ country could eradicate malaria, so can we.
But Kenya has much to do.
Last year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that Kenya -- and all 15 countries in the sub-Saharan region that report deaths caused by malaria each year -- is lagging behind on the goal of reducing malaria by 40 per cent by 2020.
