‘Biko, are you happy?’
I call her back immediately. ‘Sorry, I was feeding the baby.’
‘Baby? What baby? You got another baby?’
I tell her, ‘It’s not my baby,’ and leave it like that because a little mystery is also good for editors. So I ask her what she meant about me being happy? Did she hear anything to the contrary? Don’t I sound happy in my columns anymore? Do I sound sad and pessimistic and defeated? Am I making readers sad?
‘Calm down,’ she said. ‘We are exploring the idea of happiness for our next issue, perhaps you can tell us if you are happy or what happiness means to you?’
