Put A Stamp On It
Sussex Life|February 2018

The average age of members of The Philatelic Society is 60. RICK WARREN writes about why collecting stamps is the ideal hobby when you have time on your hands

Put A Stamp On It

STAMP-COLLECTING is still one of the world’s most popular hobbies, with an estimated 60 million active collectors worldwide. It is an absorbing pastime and can be financially rewarding, too.

Mobile telephony and emails have changed the way we communicate. If written letters have not completely disappeared, they are now something of a rarity. As are the stamps that would have been stuck to them, which is a shame. For postage stamps are an insight into that country’s culture. Each fires the imagination and allows us to share some part of the history behind its making – from the country and year in which it originated, to the story of what it depicts. In their own right many are, quite simply, miniature pieces of extraordinarily beautiful art. You can be proud of a collection.

You do it in your own way, at your own pace, at a budget to suit yourself. Yes, there are catalogues and books, societies and exhibitions and all sorts of stuff on the internet that can help you. But no-one will force you to do things their way, nor to do anything you don’t want to do. It’s your hobby, your project, your collection. Any time is a good time to start a collection. Retirement brings with it unfilled hours and sorting, collating and displaying your collection is as rewarding a way of filling them as any.
