TWEAK THE TECHNIQUE

Once you’ve nailed the basics, it’s time to take your shooting skills up a notch for better and more consistent results
TWEAK THE TECHNIQUE

SLOW THE SHUTTER

Most wildlife pros strive for pin-sharp images, but using slow shutter speeds adds motion blur. Use Manual mode, start with a shutter of around 1/50 sec. Fire the shutter as the animal enters the frame and pan with them for a smooth result. If your lens has stabilisation, switch to the panning mode if this option is available.

Pan the camera while an animal is running or flying across the frame

CHECK WHITE BALANCE

Setting your camera to the Shade white balance preset might seem like a good idea for snowy subjects, but it can actually render scenes overly yellow, and ruin an otherwise pristine frosty atmosphere. Instead, keep the white balance set to Auto or Daylight for consistently neutral results, and shoot in raw, so that you can easily adjust the white balance in post if necessary.

USE A WIDER-ANGLE LENS
