There are 17 million South Africans dependent on social grants doled out by the Department of Social Development. For most, it’s their sole means of survival month to month.
On March 17, the Constitutional Court in Johannesburg, the highest court in the land, ruled that the contract, between the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) to distribute social grants to the country’s poorest people would be extended for another year.
Before allowing CPS to extend its contract with Sassa, the court slammed Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini (who managed to retain her post in President Jacob Zuma’s cabinet reshuffle exercise on March 30), saying she was incompetent and should have resolved this issue months before.
