While some milk buyers have announced increases of up to 20% in the producer price for raw milk, others have not yet done so.

Based on the cost calculation, those producers who had received price increases at the top end of the spectrum would be able to continue with production, according to Bertus van Heerden, chief economist of the Milk Producers’ Organisation (MPO) .

However, the organisation remained concerned about producers who had not yet received any increases, he added.

Van Heerden said that supply shortages were not anticipated, but milk production had been under pressure since the end of 2018.
