There is a fight in Tamil Nadu for J. Jayalalithaa’s legacy, and new contenders seem to pop up every day. First, her aide V.K. Sasikala and former chief minister O. Panneerselvam, each claimed to be her true heir. Soon, Jayalalithaa’s niece, Deepa Jayakumar, entered the fray, floating her own party. Now, Deepa’s husband, Madhavan, who recently quit her party, has announced that he would launch a new party. Apparently, he, too, feels he can stake claim to Jayalalithaa’s legacy.
Saffron welcome
The BJP’s goal of a Congress-free India seems to have been amended to include every party. On April 2, Samajwadi Party spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia joined the party; the following day, former Congress MLA Amrish Singh Gautam entered the saffron fold. And, apparently, there’s more to come. A BJP spokesperson said that at least three senior members from all major parties are waiting to jump ship.
