Sunita Menon, a 29-year-old marketing executive, admits that she has trouble with longevity when it comes to her relationships. She says, “The initial months are perfect, but somehow the same issues crop up. The guy wants to spend more time together, but I want my space. It feels like an endless pattern.”
Menon is an isolator, a person who unconsciously pushes others away by demanding a lot of space. On the other extreme are those who get into relationships and then disappear on their family and friends for months at a stretch. Fusers, as they are called, are more likely to ditch everyone else to spend all their time with their partner.
You would think that the two kinds would never mix. But as Harville Hendrix writes in his book, Getting The Love You Want, “Ironically, fusers and isolators tend to grow up and marry each other, thus beginning an infuriating game of push and pull that leaves neither partner satisfied.”
It helps to know where you lie on this spectrum so you can break a pattern that doesn’t work for you anymore. It could also better define your relationships going forward. So, how do you find out if you are an isolator or a fuser? Take the quiz!
