Flying Training Edition.
In this edition we focus on security and safety issues involving flying training.  There are a number of new contributors to this edition as we examine why there are significantly more men than women pilots in \"Where Are the Women?\"  Jason Blair, most recently the Executive Director of the National Association of Flight Instructors, provides two articles on aviation security.  First, he examines the benefits of security from the point of view of maintenance costs.  Next, he considers flying training and the impact security requirements have on both student & instructor

Virtual Reality…Engage!  We interview our very own publisher, Dave Hook, about plans to make the technological leap from simple online periodical to virtual reality publication. Dave share’s his vision for the way ahead.  Our media friends from Down Under Grant McHerron and Steve Visscher remind US pilots just how good general aviation flyers have it in America with their article You Don’t Know How Lucky You Are, Mate!   Our flight instructor section examines mountain wave and provides tools and tips for teaching students what to look for and how to avoid becoming a fatality. Our staff airport security expert takes readers behind the Green Door and shares how to determine an annual monetary amount to the risk of assets loss. Aleca King remains on sabbatical; so, we share a timely piece from her archives. Ever feel like you or others don’t really appreciate what you have? Airshow Extravaganza.  2018 Wings Over South Texas Airshow—we cover the airshow extraordinaire held at NAS Kingsville. See the airshow as we did—front and center row in 360-degree HD video. Flight instructors! Our staff instructor pilot shows why teaching student pilots to fly airport-to-airport mitigates in-flight emergency risk AND is economical. While there are pilots who fly looking for the $100 hamburger, here in Texas it’s BBQ that’s king! We do a little I-Fly-Roads flying in Central Texas and find two places where the smoked meats and sides are “Good Enough to Make a Pilot Land!”  For professional drone flyers in the United States, we look at how a Part 107 remote pilot maintains their 24-month currency. Finally, while Aleca King is on summer holiday, we reprint her renowned poem "From the World I’ve Learned" and give it fresh visuals. Flight Training Refresher.  We kick off the new year by interviewing Vashon Aircraft staff on the new Ranger 7 very light sport aircraft. Next, our staff flight instructor offers advice to flight instructors preparing for another season of good flying weather and new students by looking at refueling procedures and bird strike avoidance. We examine the issue of unruly passengers with an article on cabin combat and practical inflight passenger restraint. Finally, VVIP expert flight attendant and columnist Aleca King provides insights into the value of periodic safety refresher training. Virtual Reality Air Show!  In this issue, we take one small step forward in the magazine and one giant leap for our readers by introducing virtual reality and 360-degree photography to our pages. We dive into the 2017 Joint Base San Antonio Air Show and Open House with our VR360 cameras. Readers can see what it is like to sit in the cockpit of vintage fighters and modern military transports. We’ve also created a couple of videos of the air show so you can experience the air show—just click and watch.

On the more serious side, we examine the U.S. Transportation Security Administration’s update to its security guidelines for the General Aviation community.  Was it worth the thirteen year wait? September 2017.  In this issue, Dr. Stacy Tyler of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University focuses on the insider threat at airports and provides recent examples of U.S. case law. Dave Hook continues his mini-series on surviving after an airplane crash with surviving after first 24 hours. June 2017.  In this issue Professor Michelle Parker of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University  examines see-and-avoid issues with unmanned aircraft. We interview water survival expert Jon Ehm of Survival Systems U.S.A. on how to survive after a general aviation aircraft ditching at sea.
