NPD Bookscan เผยว่า ในปี 2021 หนอนหนังสือชาวอเมริกันได้ซื้อหนังสือไปถึง 825 ล้านเล่ม ถือว่าเป็นปีที่ขายหนังสือแบบตีพิมพ์ได้ดีที่สุดเลยก็ว่าได้ โดยข้อมูลที่ทางบริษัทรวบรวมเผยให้เห็นว่า ตลาดหนังสือโตขึ้นถึงร้อยละ 9 เมื่อเทียบกับปี 2020 และปี 2021 มียอดขายมากกว่าปี 2020 ถึง 67 ล้านเล่ม และมากกว่าปี 2019 ถึง 125 ล้านเล่มอีกด้วย

Kristen McLean กรรมการบริหารและนักวิเคราะห์จาก NPD Bookscan กล่าวว่าโซเซียลมีเดีย โดยเฉพาะผู้ใช้งาน TikTok ที่โพสต์เกี่ยวกับหนังสือ หรือกลุ่มที่เรียกว่า BookTok เป็น “ตัวการหลักอย่างแน่นอน” ที่ช่วยผลักให้ยอดขายหนังสือพุ่งขึ้น

อิทธิพลของ TikTok เริ่มมีผลตั้งแต่ช่วงปี 2020 ในการช่วยดันยอดขายหนังสือ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งหนังสือกลุ่ม Young Adult และอิทธิพลของโซเซียลมีเดียแพลตฟอร์มยักษ์ใหญ่นี้ยังไปช่วยดันยอดขายของหนังสือกลุ่ม Adult Fiction และ Adult Nonfiction อีกด้วย

หนังสือประเภท Adult Fiction แซงหน้าประเภทอื่นๆ ในปี 2021 ด้วยยอดขายที่เพิ่มขึ้นจากปีก่อนหน้าถึงร้อยละ 25 ส่วนหนังสือประเภท Young Adult ก็ทำยอดขายได้สวยที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์ข้อมูลของทาง NPD Bookscan โดยมียอดขายเพิ่มขึ้นถึง 4 เท่าเมื่อเทียบกับข้อมูลปี 2004
