Sen. Aquilino Martin "Koko" Pimentel III stepped down from the Senate presidency earlier this year with a strangely beatific demeanor. That same day, the Senate press corps badgered him, to the point that he admitted that he and his girlfriend, Anna Kathryna Yu, were engaged to be married. It is indeed a new life and a new beginning for Sen. Koko, whose first marriage ended acrimoniously in 2011. Kathryna is 18 years younger than Koko, but the bond between them is unique.

During this year, they will move to different major tourist destinations, this time not to rehabilitate, but to head off the kind of environmental and social catastrophes that occurred in Boracay and Baguio. [This initiative has, of course, been suspended, in light of the crisis, but is still very much alive, and will be continued when practical. —Ed.]

The 25th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, Lucas Bersamin, was appointed at a time of unusual political polarization. While it is hard to say that an organized political opposition exists, some elements did criticize his appointment, accusing Bersamin of being beholden to former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, during whose term he was appointed twice. Asian Dragon thought it would be interesting to meet him and get to know him in the context of his career, which has been distinguished. Politics aside, this is a man who has risen through the ranks of the justice system, starting as a provincial lawyer. It is hard to argue that he lacks the qualifications and experience to be in the highest seat of the judiciary.
