This month, our cover story titled, ‘SDG 6: Enabling the Transformative Sustainable
Development Agenda for India’ explores the link between the other SDGs and SDG
6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and takes forward the general linkages between the
various SDGs in the economic, social, and environmental dimensions in the Indian
context. Significantly, it is generally acknowledged that the overall success in achieving
the SDGs rests to a large extent on India achieving the SDGs. Needless to say that
achieving SDG 6 is a crucial part of achieving all the SDGs.

Bengaluru is currently facing an acute water crisis, exacerbating the city’s longstanding struggle with water scarcity. Rapid urbanization, coupled with inefficient water management practices and erratic rainfall patterns, have pushed the city to the brink. Residents are grappling with dwindling water reserves, relying heavily on tankers for their daily needs. The crisis has prompted calls for urgent action, with experts advocating for sustainable solutions such as rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling. In this article, Indumathi Somashekar discusses the water crisis situation in the city along with some immediate and long-term steps to control the situation.

Microplastic pollution in terrestrial environments poses a significant threat to ecosystems and human health. These tiny plastic particles can be found ubiquitously in soils, sediments, and even in the air. Once in the soil, microplastics can disrupt soil structure, affecting water retention and nutrient cycling, thus impairing the growth and health of plants. There are concerns about the potential transfer of microplastics to crops consumed by humans, raising questions about their impact on human health. Anagha Krishnan asserts that microplastic pollution is a significant driver accelerating climate change. This article offers insights into the persistence and toxicity of microplastics in the terrestrial environment.

Sand is vital for a country like India due to its ever-expanding urban population and construction needs. In this insightful article, Dr Indumathi Somashekar highlights that sand dredging is the process of excavating sand, silt, and other sediment from the bottom of water bodies using large machinery. Dredging is carried out for various purposes such as beach reclamation and maintaining waterways for the smooth navigation of boats and ships. However, sand dredging could do more harm than good if not adequately planned. Widespread awareness of the importance of sand and the drastic effects of dredging is the first step to saving sand. Over the last decade, the Government of India has passed several regulations to curb sand mining, which could serve as a starting point.

The UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP28, recently concluded in Dubai, UAE. COP28 made significant progress on various fronts, including the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund established at COP27. It also conducted the inaugural ‘Global Stocktake’ and laid the groundwork for a fossil-fuel-free future through a groundbreaking decision. In this article, Dr Anil Pratap Singh sheds light on the deliberations that transpired at COP28, emphasizing India’s pivotal role in the conference.

Biba Jasmine highlights the need to foster inclusive economic growth that benefits all stakeholders. As a result, businesses need to re-evaluate their investment portfolios, procurement strategies and supply chains. However, companies cannot do this alone. Consumers also have a crucial role to play.

Water security entails guaranteeing access to safe drinking water, efficiently managing water resources, and mitigating the threat of water-borne diseases. In this article, Amitava Bhattacharya presents a situational analysis of drinking water security in Gujarat, highlighting the government’s initiatives to ensure access to safe drinking water in the State. Additionally, the author delves into the groundwater quality monitoring plan in Gujarat, emphasizing the idea that by purifying water today, we can ensure cleaner drinking water for the future.

In this article, Dr Livleen K Kahlon says that acquiring green skills has become an essential requirement of our time as green skills pave the way for job opportunities that contribute to the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. Design of quality education and training opportunities for young people is a pre-requisite for enhanced employability under the sector of green skills. Institutions design activities and projects to meet the rising expectations of the young minds. To be able to match requirements of green jobs to be created in future, a timely investment in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is therefore highly recommended.

While preparedness, alerts and warnings, and other measures of heat action plans have vastly reduced the impact of heat waves, the duration and frequency of climate-induced heat waves are on the rise. Jency Samuel says that as heat waves impact people’s health and livelihood, and the nation’s economy adversely, there is a need to improve and better implement the heat action plans.

World Environment Day 2023 serves as an important reminder that the actions we take to mitigate plastic pollution have a significant impact. Now, more than ever, we must intensify these efforts and swiftly transition to a circular economy. Avanti Roy-Basu and Girija K Bharat say that as the world celebrates World Environment Day in 2023 focusing on “solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution”, it is crucial to understand that each one of us has multiple roles to play to address this global crisis.

In this article, Sharada Balasubramanian highlights that a series of flames have been breaking out, year after year, at the Brahmapuram landfill in Kerala. Yet, it was not taken seriously. This year, the massive uncontrollable fire breakout urged the Kochi Corporation to take serious steps to resolve this issue as it impacted the health of people, and the environment. Brahmapuram is the only landfill that is a bone of contention in Kerala where solid waste management, otherwise is decentralized and systematic. Plans are underway to solve this crisis that the Kochi Corporation is facing after the Brahmapuram incident.

In this article, Himanshu Kumar and Vivek Kumar say that a new tradition of scholarship must evolve to understand the village systems at the conceptual and theoretical levels. The way rural and village has been historically interpreted and
understood needs refinement as the colonial imprint has distorted the existing fabric of the rural social systems. Agriculture, peasantry, land use, social systems and infrastructure, and indigenous technical knowledge systems need a more profound
understanding of structural-functional and comparative analysis approaches.

This special edition of TerraGreen has covered a wide range of contributions on India’s leadership at G20, mainstreaming sustainable development, climate change, migration, Prime Minister’s LiFE Movement, and climate smart agriculture. These contributions make strong, informative, and well-analysed suggestions for mainstreaming sustainable development and climate resilience for collective action.

In this article, Manisha Jain and Dr Kriti Akansha highlight that it is necessary to support long-term thinking, transformation, flexibility and innovation while taking the associated climate risks into consideration to attain climate resilience. There is a need for a robust framework that ensures climate policies are integrated into all sectors and that planning, implementation, and evaluation are strictly followed.

The United Nations General Assembly at its 75th session in March 2021 declared 2023 the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). In this article, Livleen K Kahlon says that with the UNGA declaring 2023 as the International Year of Millets, there’s a renewed focus on these nutritious grains. This move will serve best in the interest of developing countries, where almost 97 per cent of global millet production happens. But, it is going to take a lot of effort to change the mindset and lifestyles of consumers towards a millet-positive diet.

When we talk and act on climate action and the energy transition in emerging economies, the discussion can range from topics such as climate mitigation, adaptation, energy transition, financing, and business model innovation to next generation technologies. In this article,
Biba Jasmine says that given the current debate and discourse around net zero and carbon neutrality, it is important to pause for a moment and reflect on whether companies need to realign their purpose to serve a more holistic set of stakeholders—including the environment—
and leverage additional channels to demonstrate their commitment to more sustainable activities along the value chain. It stands to reason to ask what companies can—and must—do to make progress towards a low-carbon economy.

COP27 took place in November 2022 in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh. The Conference concluded with a historic decision to establish and operationalize a loss and damage fund. Dr Anil Pratap Singh takes us through the highlights of this important climate conference and concludes that at COP27, unrelenting deliberations took place on setting needs and priorities of the Parties; thereby resolute implementation plans for the future were developed during the deliberations.

This can be achieved by following the globally established business rules of MSW management. In this paper Dr. Anil Kumar Agnihotri discusses how MSW is a serious issue in India needing immediate attention for managing it sustainably and for making Bharat Swachh and healthy.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen generated from renewable sources of energy. In a far-sighted move, India has launched an ambitious Hydrogen Mission in August 2021 and further the Indian government announced the Green Hydrogen Policy in February 2022. In this article, Lata Vishwanath says that production of clean/green hydrogen gas is being seen as the answer to climate change mitigation in the decades to come. Because of its vital role in oil and gas industry, refineries, fertilizers, and a host of other applications as an energy carrier the world can be made less dependent on fossil fuels.

In this article, Biba Jasmine highlights how India maintains a cordial balance between its rich traditional heritage and modernity without negatively impacting the environment. But, she also feels that technological advances alone or smart governance alone may not be
able to solve the fundamental problem that environmental governance must address. While environmental governance is becoming more comprehensive, it is clear that the path and pace of development are constantly redefining the problems it faces.

This month’s cover story ‘Microplastics in Ganga River’ delves into two recent studies that have revealed the high prevalence of microplastics in the Ganga River basin, and pointed to the risks involved to freshwater biodiversity in the region. The
first of these studies, “Quantitative Analysis of Microplastics along River Ganga” by Toxics Links, was done by examining the waters of the Ganga River off Haridwar, Kanpur and Varanasi at several points in the respective cities, and documenting the
kinds of microplastics present in the waters. The second study, “Risk Assessment of Plastic Pollution to Migratory Species in the Mekong and Ganga River Basins” done for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Convention on
Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) examined the waters at several points of the Mekong and Ganga basins.

India has shown the rest of the world that it is possible to improve human development and the environment on a global scale while helping millions of marginalized people through development efforts. It has also been recognized and accepted that sustainable development requires protection of the environment on all fronts, especially irreplaceable natural resources and fragile ecosystems.

In this article, Anita Khuller says that with increasing news of areas facing water shortages and drought, saving water and using it more efficiently has become the need of the hour. Globally, providing clean drinking water is becoming a bigger challenge with population growth. To avert this challenge, the Government of India launched the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in August 2019 to provide safe drinking water to all rural households by 2024. JJM focuses on 1592 water-stressed blocks in 256 districts. The programme will also implement source sustainability measures as mandatory
elements, such as recharge and reuse through grey water management, water conservation, rainwater harvesting. Read on to know more…

Mining is an important activity for India. With 3527 mining leases for 40 major minerals, extending a total lease area of roughly 315,986 hectares, India is a major producer of crucial minerals such as chromite, iron ore, coal, and bauxite, among others. The mineral resource sector has the potential to impact environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and economic development. Mary Abraham analyses India’s mining sector, which looks set to move India towards a sustainable and equitable future.

Forest owlets are an endemic species to India. They are found only in small pockets of forest patches in India, and nowhere else in the world. The species were thought to be extinct, until a group of scientists rediscovered the species, and then started working on them. The forest owlets are threatened by severe habitat loss and development projects, apart from changes in climate. Sharada Balasubramanian writes about the birds, their rediscovery and how their habitat is threatened by ancient climate change and landscape modification.

In this article, Lata Vishwanath discusses different aspects of silk production in India. The industry which has received funding from convergence of various ministries has given sustainable livelihood to farmers, in particular to women of marginalized communities in the states of Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Bihar by giving them jobs. She also says the Government of India has special focus on the development of silk industry in the Northeast States.

India has vast reserves of minerals, which are important for its industrial and economic growth; alongside the sector being one of the largest employers in the country. Biba Jasmine discusses how non-renewable minerals that are limited in nature and whose unsustainable extraction causes imbalance can potentially be placed for better environmental protection and preservation. The article is written keeping in mind the unprecedented destruction that non-renewable mineral extraction causes to biodiversity, forest, water balance, micro-climate and most of all, releasing greenhouse gases in the environment.

In the first few decades since Independence, disaster response in India was traditionally concerned with relief and rehabilitation during the post-disaster period. It was only following the 1999 Odisha super cyclone and the 2001 Bhuj earthquake that disaster management in India came into maturity. In this article,  Dr Rina Mukherji traces the growth of disaster response and its evolution in India, over the years.

International Youth Day is celebrated annually on August 12 to bring youth issues to the focus of the international community and to celebrate the potential of youth as active partners in the global society. In this article, Dr Livleen K Kahlon expounds on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and feels that we need to act now to catch the ‘potential workforce’ at an early age and equip them with soft skills and technical expertise so that once they step out of their formal education stage they are able to earn their living. Avenues are to be created to match the skills of every youth and some of these areas are being addressed by the NEP.
