The Melting Indian Sponge Iron Industry -
Our December cover story looks at the Indian Sponge iron industry with an aim
to understand its current condition and sustainability in short to medium term.
The Indian Sponge iron industry is passing through turbulent times owing to a
variety of factors right from poor raw material availability to weak off-take in
the finish market. Our team headed by G. Swapnil took a dive into various
issues affecting the present and future of the Sponge iron industry in India. The
team also gathered views from some eminent players in the industry.
Collectively, it was given to understand that the standalone units in the steel
industry are in a precarious condition and it may get tougher for these units to
survive the battle against poor raw material and skimpy demand.
A couple of other interesting reads in the issue are Tata Steel’s CTO talking of
Dry Quenching Technology; an interesting chat with Subhrakant Panda,
President of International Chromium Development Association on the future of
