As we enter December, it is always a good opportunity to look back and ponder over the past year. The year 2023 certainly has not been an easy year by any means for the industry, but there was plenty of brightness if you knew where to look. Notably, the outbound travel sector in India has displayed remarkable growth, defying the constraints that defined the year. September ushers in the spirit of festivity in India. The world of tourism is all set to be abuzz with activity and reach its peak this festive season as travellers await eagerly to throng new destinations. The festive season has uplifted the spirits of travel enthusiasts, ushering in much-needed cheer in the travel and tourism sector and indicating a shift in consumer travel. Travellers are now planning travel for the upcoming winter holidays of Christmas and New Year. Flight searches have risen 25-30 per cent for leisure travel during holidays, and last-minute airfares for popular routes still see a steep jump due to high travel demand.

Across most holiday destinations, hotels and resorts are now witnessing over 80 per cent of room occupancy, and the season looks promising.

With the advent of monsoons, the season tends to slow down the hospitality business, but the industry is upbeat as the travel demand is increasing month on month. There is optimism amongst the hospitality stakeholders, and that is strongly reflected in our July 2022 issue. With the monsoon soon approaching, India is still in its vacation mode. After almost 2.5 years of COVID-induced lockdowns and restrictions, this is the first summer that everyone is looking forward to breaking free from their mundane routine. Leisure tourism has increased in the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Goa have witnessed a surge in leisure tourism. Presently, as the pandemic fear wanes, and international travel opens, many corporates are now gathering their steam and teams together for various activities such as team building, strategic planning, and rewards and recognition events, which were on halt for the past two years.

With the resumption of scheduled international flights, the National Tourist offices (NTOs) and DMC operators in India are banking on the burgeoning Indian outbound market, which is expected to gain an uptick post the pandemic. India presents an immense opportunity for destination marketers to leverage the country’s holiday seekers and the young population, which includes Gen Z and millennials who are more likely to travel internationally.

Air connectivity between India and other countries is also improving tremendously, with many international airlines resuming their services to India. Outbound travel in India has also been reasonable because of the growing low-cost airline market.

Looking at the positive developments, the TTJ April 2022 issue focuses on Outbound Travel. With the Omicron-led wave of the COVID pandemic still underway, and though the centre and the states have so far avoided lockdowns, the travel and hospitality industry is still absorbing the full brunt of the downturn. 

While the hotels and airlines initially witnessed a wave of cancellations and faced debilitating losses, the mild manifestation of the Omicron variant has given some relief and the resultant rise in domestic travel is now keeping them going while strategising new ideas to capture the potential market. Until international travel returns to normal, the pent-up demand and the newfound craze for domestic discoveries are likely to boost the industries’ recovery from the impact of Omicron.

Travel restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the omicron variant are hammering the already beleaguered travel and tourism industry, after adding gloom in the crucial winter holiday season. Travellers are rescheduling or cancelling trips because of the tightening rules and the threat perception of Omicron infection.

The year 2022 has us all rewrite our travel and business expectations. It is a wait-and-watch situation once again for the industry. Yet, as to travel is human, we expect travellers to be keen to venture out soon, plan in advance, take all precautions, remain flexible and get insurance cover.
