Mr Modi’s NDA government returned to power in May this year, with a clear electoral majority, in what was the world’s biggest election exercise. It also saw perhaps for the first time in recent memory, India’s apolitical Armed Forces, being dragged into the campaign rhetoric of all major parties, with matters ranging from the Rafale deal to the Balakot strikes, time and again.
