When we think of economic empowerment, we often think
of economic development or growth. However, in this
issue, we are focusing on the concept of 'empowerment'
in the context of Indigenous Peoples, businesses, and
communities. This includes reconciliation, long-term sustainable
economic growth, human rights, autonomy, increased skills, 
confidence and more. 

As a platform, SAY Magazine is committed to amplifying
these voices and promoting these perspectives.
When we choose to empower others, we are not just investing in
their potential, but also uplifting and encouraging their strengths. It's
about saying 'yes' to someone's ideas and believing in their potential.
This simple act can lead to extraordinary and positive results, shaping
not just their lives but also the world around us. The economic future
of our world is dependent on human-centered leadership and human
relationships, regardless of all of the technology available to us. 
The world still has so much to learn from an Indigenous lens.

Throughout this issue, we highlight a few Manitoba-based businesses
doing their part to increase economic sustainability and development,
including the annual Vision Quest Conference and Trade Show. Keep
reading for more inspiring stories from several women entrepreneurs
who are leading the way as changemakers and role models for other
Indigenous women and girls who hope to one day start their own enterprises.

Holistic health—what does that mean to you? 

For me, a lot of it has to do with finding that balance in my life which can be challenging most days. To live holistically we must care for all parts of ourselves and to do that successfully I believe it’s important to feel empowered when it comes to our health at whatever stage we are at on our journey.

In this issue, Indigenous healer Asha Frost shares a personal story where, at a disheartening moment in time at a doctor's office, she drew on the teachings of the Medicine Wheel and soon felt optimistic knowing deep down there was another answer. She reminds us, “We are all worthy of being seen in our wholeness.” Flip to page six to learn more.

On the cover of this issue is the buffalo, a stunning image captured by photographer Johane Janelle and a timely representation of hope and revitalization. The return of the buffalo represents a positive step towards ecological and cultural renewal with the rebuilding of that relationship between buffalo and Indigenous Peoples for the health of future generations. SAY Magazine was pleased to speak with Katira Crow Shoe (quoted above) from the International Buffalo Relations Institute about the importance of buffalo and their influences on our holistic health. Make sure to check out the cover story for all the details including more beautiful photography of this keystone species.

As you flip through these pages I hope you feel encouraged on your wellness journey. Do what makes you happy and set some clear goals for personal empowerment: find movement you enjoy, make time for reflection, connect with nature, connect with others, eat well, get some sleep, and love deeply.

Art is a powerful form of storytelling that will always be
relevant. “Art is disarming,” says Sophia Lebessis, owner
of Transformation Fine Art. “No matter what art form
it is, it’s disarming.” In our cover story, Lebessis further
expands on art's role in transformative learning. “You might not
understand what you’re looking at, but there’s an effect on you
and your conscience.”
Indigenous art, in all its forms, plays an important role in Truth
and Reconciliation. It allows for connection with Indigenous
cultures, histories and traditions. For Canadians genuinely
interested in Indigenous art and the story behind the creation,
Lebessis encourages “to go beyond what you learn in school,
start with techne, look for the essence that the carver (the artist)
was trying to capture,” before asking a thousand questions.
Indigenous artists take on the responsibility of sharing the
knowledge of the people and the communities they represent.
SAY Magazine is honoured to celebrate some of those creative
individuals in this issue—each an expert in their chosen
mediums, an educator, and a role model for others.

Welcome to SAY Magazine’s last publication of 2022! With inspiring stories layered throughout this Holistic Health publication of SAY Magazine, we are reminded of what is most important. Living in a holistic way is something we can all strive for, for personal fulfillment and overall well-being, considering the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual elements, each requiring equal attention. As we look ahead to 2023, I hope you are inspired by the expertise and personal triumphs of those who have so bravely contributed to this issue. As always, we welcome your submissions as we strive to include a diversity of voices and contemporary Indigenous lifestyles in each and every issue.


This Education and Training issue is different than previous SAY Magazine Education and Career guides in that we decided to stick with what we are good at and let the voices of our Indigenous Peoples guide the direction of this issue with their stories. It is important to identify those post-secondary institutions that have not only committed to ongoing Indigenization and reconciliation efforts, but who are in fact demonstrating TRC compliance and taking reconcili-action, moving reconciliation forward. Reconciliation is a complex topic that involves all of us, Indigenous and non- Indigenous, and SAY Magazine will continue to share informative and positive stories that continue the conversation and demonstrate reconcili-action.

In this issue of SAY Magazine, we celebrate a variety of exploratory opportunities that exist in different areas across Canada, and one in Mexico City. From performance art to culinary destinations and more, we honour those who are educating the masses and promoting Indigenous cultural resurgence through their innovative works.

Just in time for summer, SAY Magazine’s Arts and Entertainment issue is released as National Indigenous History Month celebrations take place across Canada. Featured in this issue are many brilliant storytellers in their own right, each specializing in their craft with intention and creativity. From music to broadcasting and podcasting, comedy, film and photography, there is something for everyone in this issue.

To claim oneself as sovereign is to assert your independence and supreme authority over your own life. In the context of Indigenous sovereignty, it is to assert independence and authority over one's own land, water, resources and people, and to govern in such a way that honours the traditional ways of knowing, being and respecting one another. In this issue, we have made a first attempt at covering such a vast and important topic. We too are still learning. With much more work ahead, this issue highlights the voices of several people who are embracing, each in their own way, a path of sovereignty through personal healing, economic empowerment and personal choice. We hope these stories will inspire you to choose sovereignty in your own life as well.

In this anniversary issue, we share an abundance of experiences and perspectives, from education in law to financial matters, culinary pursuits and incredible feats of courage. Of course, innovation can not exist without embracing change, and there’s no one that embraces change better than young people. They are our pillars for innovation, challenging the status quo and using technology to do it—read more starting on page 12.

The strength and potential of our young people, especially this next generation, is part of why SAY Magazine was created in the first place. Twenty years later, the Spirit of Aboriginal Youth (SAY), is still the heart, spirit and purpose of this publication. We value the opinions of our young people, not only as leaders of tomorrow but as leaders today. We look forward to working more with our young Indigenous professionals in the further evolution of this publication.

Welcome to SAY Magazine’s Indigenous Career Guide edition. A complementary companion to our annual Education Guide, this issue includes a Career Guide that lists institutions offering short-term programs, and transitional and vocational training opportunities from across Canada. Also featured are encouraging stories of professionals whose career paths were not always obvious or linear. We chose to share various interviews in this issue so that readers can easily get to the questions, and answers, that interest them most. Keep flipping for great tips, resources and inspiration.

Over the years, SAY has shared incredible stories of Indigenous economic development, and while the word “development” signifies growth, we wanted to take it one step further and focus on another key component to the success of our communities—empowerment.
