Bangladesh is going to observe 9 August 2023 as National Energy Security Day when the country is passing through a very uncertain power and gas supply situation. This day has been commemorated for the past 14 years to celebrate the foundation stone setting of energy security by taking over ownership of five major gas fields. Despite challenges faced after the liberation, Bangabandhu maneuvered and established the sovereign right of the people over natural resources, ensuring access to electricity and energy for all citizens. However, the over-reliance on imported fuel, with 60% dependency, has led to repeated price increases and financial stress for state-owned enterprises. Subsidies in the sector have reached alarming levels, and experts fear further escalation. Experts attribute the current energy crisis to deviating from Bangabandhu's visionary roadmap. The exploration and utilization of domestic gas and coal resources have been overlooked, resulting in a heavy reliance on imports. Experts emphasize the need to return to Bangabandhu's philosophy, focusing on the exploration and utilization of domestic resources, increasing efficiency, and reducing dependency on imported fuel. The government aims to rectify the mismanagement from previous regimes and adhere to Bangabandhu's roadmap for energy security.

Considering the goal of becoming a developed economy by 2041, the availability of competitive electricity and fuel prices is essential. The country must expedite exploration for new gas resources, utilize domestic coal, and optimize resource utilization to reduce import dependence. Getting back to Bangabandhu's energy philosophy and ensuring self-sustained energy security may serve as a guiding principle.

تكرارFortnightly

Energy & Power (EP) is the first and only full-fledged fortnightly magazine that deals with the much cried over energy and power sector in Bangladesh. Since its inception in June 16, 2003, EP is working very hard to
a) Develop public consciousness on sustainable and even development of energy sector;
b) Assist the policy makers in assuming pragmatic policies for a balanced development of the energy sector;
c) Continuous supply of information among public; and
d) Develop a group of reporters in this field

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world.
It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption.
In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh.
The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
