In this issue

Pangolins lack teeth, are covered with scales and are
insectivorous. The ancestor of the mammal order Pholidota,
which contains eight species of living pangolin, evolved some
37,3 million years ago from a generalised, ancestral, placental
mammal that also gave rise to the cat- and doglike animals.
Consequently, the pangolins and carnivores are closely
related and share some of their nuclear DNA. The pangolins
that occur in Asia and the Far East evolved 22,8 million years
ago and those in Africa some 12,9 million years ago.
