Jagters wat al ’n springbokvoorsitjag in die Karoo ervaar het of diegene wat die
voorreg het om dit jaarliks te doen, sal weet dis ’n unieke jag – net so uniek soos
om in die bosveld, Oos-Kaap of Kalahari te jag. Hierdie avonture maak Suid-
Afrika eiesoortig, al het jag in ons land die laaste 40 jaar ’n totale gedaantewisseling
ondergaan, met die meeste jagervarings wat nou grotendeels van die agterkant van ’n
voertuig eerder as te voet in die veld plaasvind. Stefan Fouché en Hancke Hudson wys
hoe ons weer die wese van ’n ware jagtog kan ervaar. Verlede jaar het hulle die spiralhorn challenge te voet aangedurf en met ’n dubbelloop en oop visier gejag. Vanjaar het dié twee manne die jagveld ingevaar met net ’n rugsak elk – geen voertuig of luukse lodge nie. Lees op bl 14 hoe hulle tent opgeslaan het, op hul boude in die rooi sand gesit en die sterrehemel bewonder het, en met behulp van koplampies hul trofee op hul skouers in die donker teruggedra het “kamp” toe – ’n heel nuwe avontuur.
As the days started to shorten and the trees in his garden turned to autumn colours,
Lawrence Jennings returned to Middelkop Safaris in the Vryburg region to fulfil his
lifelong dream of hunting a big eland bull. Although he unfortunately wounded and lost
the eland, he outsmarted a fine gemsbuck bull after a hard hunt. On p 23 he shares
these hunts and reflects on the lessons it has taught him – lessons that will help him
become a better hunter and outdoorsman.
