The headline-grabbing story last month was Chinas illegal stationing of an oil rig deep inside Vietnam's Exclusive Economic Zone in violation of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and posing a threat to the maritime sovereignty of nearby countries. The incident sparked protests in Vietnam that killed two people and injured more than 100 others. On behalf of VET I express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. In response the Vietnamese Government worked hard to maintain order and protect foreign-owned factories following the protests and the situation is now well and truly under control. The governments efforts eased investors’ concerns and some foreign investors said openly that they would not be deterred by the short-term turbulence. Vietnam’s commitment to protecting foreign investors was reiterated by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung when he attended the World Economic Forum in Manila. The PM spoke of Vietnam’s two driving forces: international integration and internal reform along with the opportunities available for foreign investors to explore, referring to macro-economic stability, incentives and future bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements.
