The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences earlier this year brought on the Polich Tallix foundry to not only return it to bronze but to get it as close to the original Oscar statue, which dates back to 1928. Also in this issue, well-known artist Mauro Oliveira has created Living with Oscars, a series of paintings. We had the great joy of sitting down with him and learning about his amazing life story and this beautiful series of hand-painted Oscars on framed wood canvas that are well over five feet tall and, without a doubt, are statement pieces. 

Keeping up with the traditions of the red carpet, this season we bring you our “Underwater Red Carpet” gowns in the fashion pages of this issue. This is not only a beautiful shoot but a very touching one. It was produced with the charity Face Forward, which provides pro bono emotional support and reconstructive surgery to victims of violent and disfiguring crimes, such as domestic violence, human trafficking or any other criminal acts of cruelty. Thank you to the celebrities who got into the gowns and in the water with some of the survivors, and thank you to designer Dalia MacPhee for your beautiful gowns. Fall fashion and art are always high on our list this time of year. In this issue, we bring you 16 pages of amazing fashion photography by Natasha Kertes. “Youthful Bliss” focuses on a young man with such a graceful youth but with an artistic edge, and it is a pure viewing pleasure. An exciting twist for our fashion pages was when Kertes decided to leave town and go to Paris to shoot our women’s fashion feature “Paris Blues.” Despite the hardships and/or blues that Paris has recently faced, we focus on the beautiful blues that still win our hearts in the fall months from one of the leading cities in fashion. 

Just over a year ago, we met photographer Karen Bystedt at her art opening here in West Hollywood. We fell in love with her work, but we also fell in love with her story. In short, she shot Andy Warhol in college … and lost the negatives. Over the course of living life, she also lost herself, but in the end, she found both.

W caught wind of another artist we were all too familiar with, and who made perfect sense to be included in this issue. Musician and lead singer of the rock band Incubus Brandon Boyd has a new artistic endeavor—a jewelry collaboration with designer Ali Grace that you will see in stores this fall. 

Other notable profiles we cover in this issue are Alexandra Von Furstenberg, Phenomenal Mark (who is a tour de force in fine art and fashion) along with Mitchell Binder, jewelry designer and owner of King Baby.

We took that wanderlust to the extreme in this issue with a trip to a private island in Tahiti once owned by Marlon Brando and followed that up with a trek to the Maldives. The latter was a once-in-a-lifetime journey that I’ve always wanted to take, and I was fortunate enough to embark on these luxurious trips almost back to back. I still can’t decide which island was my favorite (people keep asking)—but both were exceptional. We hope that you’ll agree and brave the jet lag on your own journey sometime soon.

Back down to Earth, our cover story on David Cooley, by writer Andy Wang, not only celebrates 25 years of The Abbey but offers insight into Cooley and his past that few have ever seen or heard. It’s nothing short of a great read!

I’ve known this brilliant designer for more than a decade, and his creative projects and global reach never cease to amaze me. And now, we have Norah next door to his empire, where you can enjoy viewing his artwork and sexy design along with a great American-inspired meal and a cocktail.

Heading south of the border, we decided to take you down to Mexico, but not just the relaxing part where you drink margaritas by the pool, though we do share exciting updates on Cabo and a new retreat outside of Punta Mita, Mexico City is the heart of this section. While it’s not a relaxing city to navigate, it’s always invigorating with new architecture, art, shops and restaurants to explore at a fast pace.

Back home on the Sunset Strip, we are happy to see the Mondrian flagship eatery turn over a new leaf and become Ivory by Brian Malarkey with design touches by John Terizan of the h.wood group. Over on Melrose, we can’t wait to see what.
