The 2021 statewide landed value of Maine’s lobster fishery sets a new record. School Union 76 Interim Superintendent Bob England resigns. Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School science teacher Mickie Flores receives the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. And two nominees from Ellsworth are selected for the open Senate District 7 seat that will be filled by special election on June 14. 

School Union 76 plans for shared leadership at Deer Isle-Stonington High School in the wake of its principal’s resignation. Mariners Soar! St. Patrick’s Day soup supper raises funds to benefit its after-school program. And the Island Nursing Home Board of Directors announces a public meeting to share updates on its planned reopening, legislative work and fundraising. 

Deer Isle residents show a strong interest in planning their town’s future as the comprehensive plan update gets under way. Maine lobster businesses and trade associations sue Monterey Bay Aquarium, claiming the aquarium’s attack is defamatory. And Notes from a Maine Kitchen honors the Maine state treat—the whoopie pie!

Deer Isle voters approve all budget items  at Town Meeting. Stonington voters okay a new ordinance that restricts short-term rentals. And Chuck and Belinda Lawrence look forward to new adventures in retirement after the sale of TradeWinds Market Place to Hannaford Supermarkets.

Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries leverages a grant to develop new causeway plans. Deer Isle’s town meeting March 6 is focused on budget matters. And, also March 6, Stonington voters will weigh in on budget and ordinance issues on the town’s warrant.

The Island Nursing Home has received the go-ahead from the State of Maine to reopen—with requirements. The Stonington planning board will hold a public hearing March 2 on a draft of a short-term rental ordinance. And Notes from a Maine Kitchen features delicious dumplings.

Towns in School Union 76 see a reduction in state funding for education in the coming year. Delays in heating assistance are leaving area seniors in the cold. And the Deer Isle-Stonington schools are partnering with Healthy Island Project to establish food pantries and a weekend backpack program.

The island’s elementary and high schools reopen after burst pipes and sprinklers resulted in a brief closure. Recent freezing temperatures and wind damage pipes and power lines, adding to the island’s water woes. And voters at a Deer Isle special town meeting overwhelmingly approve a growth moratorium on new subdivisions and multi-family dwelling units.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission expects to send checks to active lobstermen by this spring to help offset 2021 gear modifications. And a Deer Isle-Stonington High School student graduates early and readies to report for basic training with the Air Force in February. 

Deer Isle forges ahead with a proposed growth moratorium, while possible new ordinances for mobile vendors and houseboats are also up for consideration. Hundreds convene for the WinterFest 2023 celebration, which sported pickleball, a cribbage tournament and fireworks, among many other events. And Deer Isle’s plow struggles continue, as the much-anticipated new plow truck is delayed. 

Deer Isle’s select board rejects a request for $100,000 from the Island Nursing Home board, while Stonington’s select board puts the request on file for later consideration. A recent review by the National Marine Fisheries Service says that North Atlantic right whales are still declining despite existing efforts to protect them. And WinterFest returns January 21 with indoor and outdoor activities featuring fireworks and a community dance! 

The Island Nursing Home board delivered its application for a conditional license to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. During extended power outages, the Island Community Center stands ready to serve as a designated warming center. And Deer Isle proposes a moratorium on growth, the topic of a public hearing scheduled for January 26.  

Pres. Biden signs a bill that provides a six-year pause on new whale rules, giving the lobster industry time and money to adapt technologies. Winter Storm Elliott pummels Hancock County, leaving widespread damage and power outages in its wake. And the Island Nursing Home board of directors drafts a renewal conditional license for a residential care facility to submit to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. 

Work begins on the Mill Hill Bridge replacement project, which is scheduled to be done in November 2023. Firefighters from the Deer Isle fire department take a roadtrip to Pennsylvania to buy a bigger rescue truck. And area children create artwork to celebrate the holiday season!

The Island Nursing Home board shares its plan to reopen as a residential care home at a December 7 meeting and responds to questions from the public. The board seeks help from the community to raise $1.7 million—by mid-January. And Stonington will hold a special Town Meeting December 21 to decide whether the town should donate $10,000 to lobster defense funds.  

This week, the Deer Isle town manager says all is in readiness for when the snowflakes begin to fly. Stonington takes a look at downtown zoning to preserve the town, and a windstorm takes the power out yet again on the Island.

This week, newly elected House District 15 Representative Holly Eaton talks about her upcoming political service to the area. Coastline Physical Therapy opens an office in Blue Hill, and the Stonington Water Company is contemplating a rate hike.

The Island Nursing Home board asks area towns for help with operating losses as it looks to reopen with residential care beds. A federal district court judge grants the lobster industry a reprieve as federal regulators get two years to come up with new rules to protect right whales. And the Marine Stewardship Council announces it is suspending Gulf of Maine lobster certification. 

The Island Nursing Home board of directors seeks feedback from the public on its draft plan to reopen the facility with 32 residential-care beds by July 1, 2023. Test scores at Deer Isle-Stonington elementary and high schools show improvement since last spring, with no sign of “summer slide.” And a Stonington native reflects on semi-retirement after nearly four decades in banking. 

Local results are in for the 2022 General Election, where voter turnout was high across the Peninsula and Island. The Stonington select board agrees to put a budget article on the warrant for a special town meeting in December to address inflation costs. And two Maine organizations will receive federal fuding  to strengthen the lobster industry and improve research.  

The Maine Lobster Industry Rally attracts more than 300 fishermen, their families, state officials and the media as the industry vows to fight on. An environmental group sides with the lobster industry, asking that fishing regulators be granted two years to come up with new whale-protection rules. And Haystack Mountain School of Crafts appoints a new executive director. 

Maine Lobstering Union seeks help from President Biden in preventing implementation of whale-protection rules. A federal appeals court sides with the MLA, granting expedited consideration of its appeal of the decision in Maine Lobstermen’s Association v. National Marine Fisheries Service. And the spirit of Halloween is strong at a Deer Isle residence whose spooky decorations are designed to draw onlookers!


Lobstering families rally in Portland and plan to assemble on October 30 at Stonington’s Fish Pier. The Island Nursing Home board plans to reopen the facility with 32 residential beds and hopes to hire an administrator by December 1. And Healthy Island Project celebrates one year as Deer Isle’s market hub for the year-round, online farmers market FarmDrop. 

Deer Isle officials anticipate that the cost to remove years of ash from the transfer station will be high. A running toilet on Bay View Avenue is the latest in a string of expensive leaks in Stonington. And Nancy Hodermarsky, named the oldest person in Deer Isle, receives the Boston Post Cane!

With a federal judges’s decision on stricter whale rules expected as soon as November, discouraged lobstermen are taking every opportunity to make their voices heard. Lead is discovered in the drinking water at Deer Isle-Stonington’s elementary and high schools. And Stonington is drafting ordinances to regulate short-term rentals. 

Communities show support for lobster fishermen as rallies are planned for October in Portland and Stonington. Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries welcomes a new executive director. And the Deer Isle select board agrees to contract out some of the town’s plowing needs this winter.

The Maine Lobstermen’s Association appeals a federal district court decision upholding the latest whale rules. Island residents meet to learn about the climate factors that threaten the Deer Isle Causeway—and sources of funding available to respond. And Stonington’s new health care committee schedules a focus group with local health care workers to seek solutions to rural health care issues. 

The Island Nursing Home board has agreed to sell two-thirds of its bed rights  despite community appeals not to do so. A recent decision from a federal judge to order more stringent whale rules in the near future will significantly impact the lobster industry and coastal communities. And two longtime Islanders lend their expertise—and cooking tips—to a recent lunchtime webinar with MCCF. 

Area select boards seek a written plan from the Island Nursing Home board about its funding request, while the board continues to seek help with staffing the facility. Volunteers led by the Opiate-Free Island Partnership trained hundreds of people to use Narcan over the course of the Blue Hill Fair. And Stonington convenes a health care task force, a subcommittee of its Economic Development Committee, that will meet beginning this month. 

The Island Nursing Home board is looking for staff to reopen the facility, reaching out to area towns and former employees. Greenhead Lobster tails are the focus of a QVC television feature shot in Stonington. And the Blue Hill Fair is back at the fairgrounds over the holiday weekend for its 131st year!
