The Island Nursing Home responds to two COVID cases this week. Business will continue as usual while the Island Employee Cooperative works to reduce debt. Deer Isle and Stonington select boards hold a joint meeting to address managagement and transparency concerns at the Island Nursing Home. And lobstering associations and unions file lawsuits in response to NOAA’s newly announced whale rule.  

Members of the newly formed INH Task Force are announced. The INH closure is already impacting its residents and staff. Information about school staff vaccination rates is available online at the Maine CDC. And area sports teams persist in spite of COVID disruptions.

The Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge will see closures over a four-day period for MDOT inspections. Island Nursing Home board president seeks foreign nurses to alleviate staff shortage, while community members stress the need for a third party task force. And COVID woes continue as the Delta variant is causing an increase in state and county COVID cases. 

A community forum is planned to explore avenues for saving the Island Nursing Home. COVID-19 causes a brief school closure. The Gotwals concert will return, from a distance. Soccer is off to a slow start. And a rainbow seen across the Island graces the skies after a storm.

Deer Isle properties have been revalued for the first time in decades; preliminary tax bills go out in the mail soon. Stonington’s annual town meeting was held on the ballfield May 15. Northern Light Health is planning to reach out to Maine schools to set up free COVID-19 vaccine clinics for students age 12 and older. A proposed harbor ordinance has triggered distress among fishermen and lobster buyers who fear losing control of their livelihood to an unsympathetic select board. The Town of Deer Isle will ask for less money overall from taxpayers this year, but some will pay considerably more because of the first property revaluation in 39 years. Also inside, Stonington will hold its annual Town Meeting Saturday, May 15, at 9 a.m., outdoors at the ball field to comply with restrictions aimed at curbing the COVID-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus vaccine landscape is changing, and with nearly half of all eligible Mainers vaccinated, state officials and health care providers are trying to make it easier for everyone else to get shots. A collapsing culvert at Sunshine and Greenlaw District roads threatens to cut off access to the Sunshine peninsula, but will cost at least $380,000 to replace. Also inside, Stonington Town Meeting voters will be asked to approve an updated shoreland zoning ordinance on May 15 that transfers oversight of timber harvesting from the town to the state.

The CDC’s pause of the Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine dampens the local demand. After a recent inspection, the Deer Isle-Sedgwick bridge will see new pavement with work expected to be finished by July 1. Also inside, local browntail moth populations remain high this year with caterpillars emerging early.

A Deer Isle man has been charged with alleged gross sexual assault of a child and violating probation. After difficulty locating an address in a recent emergency, Deer Isle town officials urge residents to put their address numbers on their homes, stressing that this minor change “could save somebody’s life.” Also inside, the Maine Lobstermen’s Association urges fishery supporters to donate to the Legal Defense Fund in its response to federal whale proposals.

Local pop-up clinics were canceled or delayed on April 13 just hours after federal health officials advised a pause in use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. The Deer Isle select board voted 3-0 on April 8 to exempt Island Workforce Housing from property taxes on a five-duplex apartment complex currently under construction on Sunset Cross Road. Locals bid adieu to the Fisherman’s Friend, the old restaurant building where for more than 40 years people lined up outside for fresh seafood and blueberry pie.

The Schooner Bowdoin, the “matron” of MMA’s sail vessel training program for the past 33 years, celebrates 100 years of sailing. Four local fire departments responded when a fire broke out in Deer Isle April 6 that devoured a workshop with all the lobster traps, ropes and pot buoys inside it. The Stonington select board voted 5-0 on April 6 to buy the International Order of Odd Fellows hall on Main Street. Stonington remains Maine’s most lucrative fishing port, despite a decline in the overall lobster harvest. Island Workforce Housing has asked the Deer Isle Select Board to consider a property tax exemption for the five duplexes it’s building on Sunset Crossroad.
